For us humans flu season is upon us and so it is flu shot season. For our puppy pals the flu has no season.
There are currently two strains of Dog Flu identified. Both have been found in Ohio and our neighboring states. There have been confirmed cases as close as Mason, and Louisville has dealt with a similar outbreak to Chicago.
The dog flu mimics kennel cough and other contagious upper respiratory illnesses closely, so it is likely that mild cases have been seen in our area.
Fortunately we now have a vaccine that protects against both strains of the virus. We also know that the virus is most often spread in places where dogs congregate. If your furry family member is a social butterfly frequenting doggy daycare or dog parks, or if they are even reluctantly social at the boarding or grooming facility, Animal MD recommends considering adding the flu vaccine to their yearly vaccinations.
